Zabbix Database Backup and Restore
Database backup is probably not something we work with every day, but when something goes wrong, it suddenly becomes very important!
A lot of important Zabbix data is stored in the database. Hosts, Items, Triggers, users, events, configuration, and collected monitoring data all depend on it.
In this video, we go through the process of backing up and restoring a Zabbix database step by step.
Why Should We Back Up the Zabbix Database?
There are many reasons to keep a database backup.
Maybe we want to upgrade Zabbix, move the database to another server, or simply have a safe rollback point before making an important change.
And of course, there is always the classic situation: we changed something and things didn't go exactly as planned!
That's when a good backup becomes very useful.
Backing Up the Database
The backup process depends on the database we use with Zabbix.
For example, with PostgreSQL, we can use tools such as pg_dump. MySQL and MariaDB have their own tools for doing the same job.
The goal is simple: create a backup of our current Zabbix database that we can use later if needed.
But creating a backup file doesn't mean our job is finished.
Restoring the Zabbix Database
The more important part is knowing how to restore it.
Maybe the original database has failed, or maybe we want to move Zabbix to a new server. In either case, we need to know how to restore our backup and get Zabbix working again.
After the restore, we also need to make sure Zabbix can connect to the database and that our previous data and configuration are available.
Take a Backup Before Upgrading Zabbix
One of the most important times to take a database backup is before a Zabbix upgrade.
During an upgrade, changes may be made to the database schema. Having a good backup before starting gives us a way back if something goes wrong.
Spending a few minutes on a backup is much better than spending a few hours trying to figure out how to undo a failed upgrade!
Don't Just Take Backups — Test Them
One important point is that taking backups isn't enough.
It's a good idea to test the restore process in a test environment and make sure the backup actually works.
The worst time to discover that your backup is broken is when your production database is already gone!
In this video, we go through the Zabbix database backup and restore process in practice and see how we can back up our data and bring it back when we need it.
