Sending Zabbix Notifications to a Telegram Group
When Zabbix detects a Problem, we obviously don't want Zabbix to be the only one who knows about it! 😄
We need a simple way to send alerts to our team as quickly as possible.
One useful option is sending Zabbix notifications directly to a Telegram group.
In this video, that's exactly what we're going to set up.
What Are We Going to Do?
The idea is pretty simple.
Zabbix monitors our servers and services. When a Trigger goes into the Problem state, Zabbix sends a message to our Telegram group.
The flow looks something like this:
Zabbix → Problem → Action → Telegram Bot → Group
Zabbix detects the problem, an Action is executed, and our Telegram Bot sends the alert to the group.
Simple enough!
Creating a Telegram Bot
First, we need a Telegram Bot.
After creating the Bot, we add it to our Telegram group and get the information we need to communicate with the Telegram Bot API.
From this point, the Bot basically becomes our delivery guy. Zabbix gives it the alert, and the Bot delivers it to the group. 😄
Sending Alerts from Zabbix
On the Zabbix side, we need to configure the Media Type and the required settings for sending messages.
Then we use Actions to decide when a notification should be sent.
For example, we can send only High and Disaster problems to the group, or send alerts only for specific Host Groups.
This part is important.
If we send a message for every tiny problem, our Telegram group will quickly turn into a notification machine gun. After a while, nobody will read the alerts anymore! 😄
What Can We Include in the Message?
Zabbix Macros allow us to customize the notification message and include useful information about the problem.
For example:
Host Name
Problem Name
Severity
Event Time
Operational Data
This way, when an alert appears in the Telegram group, the team already has some useful information before even opening the Zabbix frontend.
Why Use a Telegram Group?
Sending alerts to a group is especially useful when several people are responsible for monitoring the infrastructure.
Instead of sending the notification to only one person, the whole team can see the problem and react to it.
And of course, we can take this integration much further.
The Bot doesn't have to only send notifications. Later, we can make it receive commands from users, communicate with Zabbix, and return monitoring information directly inside Telegram.
But for now, let's not turn our Bot into a new member of the monitoring team! 😄
In this video, I go through the setup step by step: creating the Telegram Bot, adding it to a group, configuring Zabbix, and finally sending Zabbix Problem notifications directly to the Telegram group.
